Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

“You cannot stop the waves, but you can learn to surf."

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a science-based, research-supported therapy that allows people to identify unpleasant and difficult emotions they may be experiencing, but then focusing instead on their personal values and taking committed action towards things that matter most to them. In ACT, clients learn that denying or avoiding difficult emotions can create more struggle and distress. Instead, individuals work on identifying and pursuing valued based living.

In utilizing ACT, clients work on focusing less on struggling with and avoiding their negative emotions, but rather accepting these feelings for what they are, but not letting them be barriers to pursuing a meaningful life.

ACT is about:

Accepting your internal experience.

Choosing a valued direction.

Taking action.

At Everwell Health and Counseling Services, our therapists work with their clients to create an individualized treatment approach that may incorporate aspects of ACT strategies to help pursue a values based life.

Our Everwell counselors provide telehealth virtual therapy and in-person counseling for Ann Arbor and its surrounding towns, Washtenaw County, and throughout the state of Michigan.
